When I studied at Central Saint Martins we were told on our first day: “We do not want you to join the world of art and design when you finish this course. We want the world of art and design to be different because you have graduated”. This is an excellent reflection of my teaching philosophy. I strongly believe in creating a platform where the students are encouraged to make a difference.
My favourite part of teaching is creating a platform for students to diverge their critical thinking skills. I believe that in most cases the process is more important than the end product. As a result, I encourage my students to experiment and I try to push them out of their comfort zone. I see my role as a facilitator. I aim to guide the students in their research so they develop and converge their ideas to produce their own unique work.
I believe that students in art and design have the unique freedom and opportunity to explore the boundaries of their chosen medium, whatever that might be, and think about problems and opportunities in new ways. Facilitating this amazing journey is a fascinating and rewarding position to be in, and this is what excites me most as an instructor.
